Our Services
Changing Tides offers individual counselling, initial consultations and parent/carer support, with a focus on understanding what’s happening, building practical skills and helping young people move through life’s challenges with greater confidence.
-
The initial consultation is an opportunity to understand what has been happening, what support has already been tried, and what you or your young person would like to be different.
We’ll explore current concerns, strengths, family and developmental context, relevant supports, and what counselling may be able to offer. It is also a chance to consider whether Changing Tides is the right fit and to discuss how counselling may work going forward.
For younger children and pre-teens, the initial consultation is generally completed with a parent or carer. For adolescents, I encourage the young person to be involved in the intake process, while considering family circumstances and the young person’s individual needs.

Individual counselling gives young people space to understand what they are experiencing, recognise patterns in their thoughts, emotions and behaviour, and develop practical ways of managing the things that are making life difficult.
My approach is collaborative and evidence-informed. Sessions may involve conversation, reflection, skill-building, practical strategies and goal setting depending on the young person’s age, preferences and what they would like support with.
I support young people experiencing:
Anxiety, worry and overthinking
Low mood, reduced motivation and withdrawal
Difficulty managing strong emotions
Anger, frustration and impulsivity
Stress, overwhelm and burnout
ADHD and neurodivergence-related challenges
Self-esteem, confidence and identity concerns
Friendship, peer and relationship difficulties
Family conflict and changes within the family
Grief, loss and significant life changes
Difficult or adverse experiences
School stress, attendance difficulties and academic pressure
Social difficulties and feeling disconnected from others
Self-harm and safety concerns
Difficulties understanding or communicating emotions
Building coping skills, resilience and emotional awareness
Counselling is not about simply changing a young person’s behaviour. Often, behaviour begins to make much more sense when we understand what is happening underneath it. My aim is to help young people develop greater understanding of themselves, strengthen the skills they already have, and find ways forward that feel realistic and meaningful.

Sometimes the most effective way to support a young person is to also support the adults around them.
Parent and carer sessions provide space to better understand what may be contributing to a young person’s emotional or behavioural responses and to explore practical ways of supporting them at home.
Support may include:
Understanding emotional and behavioural patterns
Responding to anger, distress or withdrawal
Supporting emotional regulation
Strengthening communication and connection
Navigating conflict and difficult conversations
Supporting a young person experiencing anxiety or low mood
Understanding ADHD and neurodivergent needs
Establishing helpful boundaries and expectations
Responding to school avoidance or other changes in functioning
Supporting young people through grief, change or difficult experiences
Understanding how to support your young person while respecting their growing independence and privacy
The goal is not to provide parents with a list of things they are doing “wrong”, but to develop a clearer understanding of what may be happening and identify approaches that feel realistic for your family.
